SECAD Partnership Jobs Fair 2019
September 26, 2019 @ 10:00 am - 1:00 pm
Some tips to help you make the most of your time at the Jobs Fair
Carry out some preparation!
In the days before the Jobs Fair, examine the list of companies that will be present and decide who you would like to speak to on the day. Carry out a little bit of research into the ones you are interested in as this will demonstrate to the people you speak to that you are serious about working with them. Dress to Impress!
This is your chance to make a good first impression. It is not necessary to wear a full suit, but business casual shows that you are taking your job search seriously. It also helps the employers see you in a professional light. Treat each conversation like an interview as it could lead to an actual interview in the near future.
Get in early before the competition!
Aim to arrive early so that you will have enough time to speak to all the company reps on your list and also before they get weary! Bring multiple copies of your updated CV to give to the company reps you meet.
It is completely natural to feel nervous so talk to one or two other reps before you talk to the company you would really like to work with. This gives you a chance to warm up and build your confidence. The company reps are attending the Fair because they are looking for staff so you will find that the people on the stands will be welcoming and friendly. They also need to make a good impression on you so that you will want to come to work with them.
Take Notes
Bring a notepad and pen and jot down the questions that you would like to ask the company reps. Again, it will show that you have researched their company and will give them a good impression. Remember it is never a good idea to ask a company rep: ‘So, what does your company do?’ Do your research!
Before you finish speaking to the rep, be sure to get their name and then find a quiet space to make a note of what you have discussed with them. It also gives you a chance to look over your notes before you visit the next stand. You will also be able to refer to the conversation when you write to them or when you meet them at an interview.
Follow Up Afterwards
It’s important to make contact with the company reps you’ve met after the fair has ended. Remember to keep the business cards you collect so that you have their contact details.
